SEND at St Mary's
At St Mary's Catholic Primary School we strive to ensure that your children enjoy their learning and fulfill their potential.
The staff and governors strive to ensure that appropriate provision is made for all pupils within an inclusive environment.
Sarah Wilson is our Inclusion Co-ordinator (INCo) on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
We have a team of highly trained Teaching Assistants (TA's) and Individual Needs Assistants (INA's) that work with the childen at St Mary's. They work with groups of children in class and run specific intervention groups and also work with children on a 1:1 basis.
What is SEND?
The Special Educationa Needs and Disability (SEND) Code of Practice (2014) came in to force on the 1st September 2014. It covers the 0-25 age range and includes guidance relating to disabled children and young people as well as those with SEN.
The definition of SEND taken from the Code of Practice (2014) is:
A child or young person has SEND if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her.
A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she:
* has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
* has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions
Special educational needs and provision can be considered as falling underfour braod areas:
* Communication and interaction
* Cognition and learning
* Social, mental and emotional health
* Sensory and/or physical
Special educational provision is educational or training provision that is additional to or different from that made generally for others of the same age. This means provision that goes beyond the differentiated approaches and learning arrangements normally provided as part of high quality, personalised teaching (NASEN, 2014).
Special Needs in the Classroom
All children have access to the National Curriculum.
In line with the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice, our school SEND policy details the procedures we follow to identify and make provision for pupils who may have a special educational need.
Pupils with SEND are supported in class by their class teacher and teaching assistants (TA) and Individual Needs Assistants (INA).
All our teachers work hard to ensure that their teaching matches the needs of all learners and they undergo regular training to keep their SEND knowledge up to date, therefore enabling them to provide the best for our pupils.
All classes have dedicated TA support.
Pupils may also work with other TA's in school to spport them or to do specific work eg. speech and language programmes and maths groups.
Your child may work in class with individual or small group support or may sometimes be withdrawn from the classrooom to work 1:1 with a TA or in small groups for a variety of different interventions.
Keeping you informed
We work closely in partnership with families and young children to take the time to listen, discuss and plan for the future so that we best support their needs.
We have an 'open door' policy at St Mary's and we welcome you in school to talk to us about any issues or concerns whenever you need to.
There is a weekly INCo Information section in our newsletter that is also available on the school website. This includes any information that we feel is important that you are aware of and informing you about the different specialist outside agencies that work at St Mary's.
The INCo Team hold informal termly coffee mornings to discuss any concerns that parents and carers may have.
The INCo is also always available at Parent Consultation Evenings for a more private meeting.
