Our Curriculum Drivers

Intent
At St Mary’s, we aim to provide a PE curriculum that pupils from Reception to Year 6 not only enjoy but also allows them to experience a range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing. We intend to offer a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in sport and other physically activities.
It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
We aim to ensure that the children’s experience of Physical Education is positive and motivating and that children’s attitudes to a healthy lifestyle are firmly embedded in our curriculum.
Through enrichment activities and intra-school competitions, we aim to raise the profile of PE and expose our children to sports they may never have had the opportunity to engage with. We want all children to develop a love for sport that carries on outside of school and into the wider communities.
At St Mary’s, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to be included within PE lessons and have equal access to, and participation in a range of physical activities irrespective of any special educational need/s or physical disability.
Implementation
We follow the guidelines set by the national curriculum to ensure we offer a range of PE activities that allow each child to feel challenged and offer opportunities to progress further.
Each child receives 2 hours of curriculum time PE on a weekly basis which is carefully planned and mapped out to ensure a broad and full range of skills and activities. These sessions are either delivered by a specialist PE teacher or class teachers during PE lessons.
Each lesson, children are given the opportunity to practise skills in a variety of ways and each lesson builds upon the previous skills, allowing them time to embed it. Different skills are recapped throughout, and across, the years, each time they are being built upon; allowing children to know more and remember more.
Children within Key Stage 2 attend swimming lessons where they are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of 25 metres using a range of strokes.
St Mary’s also provides the opportunities to compete against other schools in a range of different sports including:
- Football
- Netball
- Tag Rugby
- Basketball
- Cricket
- Athletics
Children also have the opportunity to be active everyday with a range of after school clubs as well as lunchtime activities that are run through our ‘OPAL’ experience.
Impact
